small man at work

This is Will playing with the computer that his Aunt Meggie gave him for Christmas. It is supposed to be virtually indestructible, but I nonetheless took it away from him five minutes after I took this picture because he was banging on the keyboard. I'm pretty sure the computer won't last until he's old enough to really know how to use it if he keeps treating it that way. Still, I think he'll love it when he gets just a little bit older.

Will has been a whirlwind of destruction lately, which is incompatible with the fact that I think I've begun nesting. I can't clean any part of of any room nearly as quickly as he can destroy the rest of it. Luckily we don't have that much to do during the days, so it might take until June, but at some point our house will probably be sort of clean and organized.

I don't have any pictures (but I know someone who does so I hope to get some soon), but last weekend Will saw real, live penguins for the first time ever! We were in Boston for our annual winter gala weekend with my Dartmouth friends and associated others. This year Debbie and Eric and young Dylan hosted, which allowed us to visit the New England Aquarium, which features several types of penguins located directly in front of you as you walk in the front door. I'd been looking forward to this event for so long that I had it in my head that it was going to be a bust and Will wouldn't understand the connection between real penguins and the animated, singing, dancing, (obnoxious) ones on Happy Feet. But he was enthralled. He loved them. He kept pointing between the real penguins and the penguin on his overalls. He definitely understood what he was looking at, and it was so cool. I also hear from a reputable source that that Saturday coincidentally happened to be this year's official Penguin Awareness Day. Well, we in our family couldn't have been more aware of penguins on that day, though we did not know at the time the appropriateness of our actions. The weekend as a whole was a lot of fun. We always have a good time when we get together with that gang, and Will gets so much attention from his nonbiological aunts that it is a nice break for me and Matt from watching him constantly.

Christmas recap

This is the little table that we got Will for Christmas this year. He loves it and held court there for most of Christmas morning. Unfortunately, however, it took him very little time to discover that it is easier for him to climb up on the table than onto the bench, so we now spend a lot of time telling him to get off the table. I'm just afraid that he's going to fall off and get hurt. It also turns out that maybe he is still a little young for crayons. He loves playing with them, but prefers to dump them out of the box onto the table, throw them onto the floor, pick them back up, sort of put them back in the box, stick some in his mouth, and start over again. Other than that, though, Christmas was a great success. Will received probably a world record in penguin-related toys and clothing, which made him very happy. We visited Matt's family in PA and my family in NY, which involved a lot of driving, but it was a good time. I don't think Will cried the entire time we were visiting people because he was having so much fun. Well, there was that time that he woke up hysterical in the middle of the night and woke up my entire family, but that doesn't count.

Will also had his first real adventure with snow. He liked it OK for a while, but then I accidently threw a snowball in his face and his love of the snow soured. But then Matt and my sister Emily took him sledding down a hill in my parents' backyard, which he liked.

Happy New Year!
