Thanksgiving trip

We're having a fun time visiting my parents and sister in upstate NY. We've been here for over a week and are heading home tomorrow. Will has been experiencing the coldest weather of his life and I'm not sure how much he likes it. But he does enjoy having a variety of people around to hold him and play with every day. We had a nice Thanksgiving with my family including my grandmother, aunt, uncle, and cousin, and also Matt's family. There's not much else to say about the week because we've done little besides sitting, eating, watching TV, and shopping. And giving Will baths, which he hates here just as much as he does at home.

Two months old

Will turned two months old last Sunday, and on Tuesday he had his two-month appointment at the pediatrician. It went well, despite the four shots he got! Of course he cried during the shots, but he recovered much more quickly than I expected, which was great. I think he was pretty sore later on in the day, though, because after we'd been home for about an hour he started to cry truly inconsolably, which is to say that not even nursing him calmed him down. I felt horribly sad for him because I knew that he must be really hurting. I gave him some baby Tylenol and after a little while he cried himself to sleep. The day turned out all right because he slept a lot and when he woke up he seemed to feel better. He was more sensitive than usual for the rest of the day, but who could blame him?

I was guessing that he might weigh as much as 11.5 lbs, but he weighed in at 10 lbs, 15 oz., so just about 11 lbs. They told us this is around the 30th percentile for two-month-old boys, but that's fine because he was in the 25th percentile at 2 weeks. So he's gaining just fine. He is 23.5 inches long, so he's grown about three inches since birth. It seems to me like he's grown more than that, but three inches in two months is a lot of growing! Being a baby is hard work. I should make fun of him less for making his sad face. I don't think I have any pictures of sad face to show you, but it is really, really cute. It is different from crying or angry face. Sad face involves scrunching up the top half of his face and shoving his lower lip out as far as he can push it. It's not at all an effective means of getting what he wants because it's just so cute that I always want to see more of it.

Word to the Wise

If you have a baby, get a mobile. We noticed recently that Will seems interested in toys, especially those held over his head while he's being changed. So we thought that if we got a mobile for his crib he might enjoy watching it for at least a few minutes at a time, which would not only make him happy but would also allow me those few minutes to do things like prepare lunch or go to the bathroom. And it was a success! Will loves the mobile. He talks to the animals and moves around to the music. Sometimes he's not in the mood for it, but sometimes it occupies him for up to twenty minutes at a time. He is very, very cute when he's playing with it.

Weekend with the Sedgewicks

This past weekend Robbie and Jess came to visit, so Will was reacquainted with his friend Mrs. Sedgewick and met a new friend, Dr. Sedgewick. We had a good time, but Will was a bit cranky during the second half of the visit. Not to worry, though--the Sedgewicks came up with an elaborate scheme to keep him happy. Robbie bounced him on the exercise ball while Jess swayed and shook Will's plastic rings, and they both sang songs (see picture above). If any element was missing, Will would cry again. It was draining for them, I'm sure, but the rest of us appreciated their efforts. And then Robbie and Jess cooked us a delicious dinner with sparse ingredients found in our kitchen.
